Exfoliating can lead to smoother, softer skin, or it can potentially hurt all the hard work you’ve put into building and maintaining your beautiful bronze tan. It all depends on if you know the smart way to scrub off those dead cells.
First of all, exfoliating before you tan is like sanding a surface before painting—it gets rid of dead, flaky skin and leaves a smooth, healthy surface ready to tan. But don’t go overboard—deep exfoliation can irritate skin, and UV exposure or the application of sunless tanner can make things worse.
Second, wait until the tanning process is done before you try any more exfoliation. After you leave the tanning bed, your skin continues the tanning process for up to 24 hours—and scrubbing before the process is done can get rid of the chemicals your skin is producing in order to achieve your bronze tones.
Finally, don’t exfoliate too often! Gentle exfoliation a few times a week can make you feel soft and smooth, but doing it too often can reduce the life of your tan and mean more work to keep your color looking its best.
