Sunless tanning is a great way to get a natural looking tan quickly, but prepping is the most important part to get the sunless tan you dreamed of.
First, you’ll want to shave and exfoliate before you get a sunless tan. And even though you’ll want to, do not apply moisturizer after you get out of the shower. This will keep the solution from absorbing as much into your skin.
A trick I always do to get even color is to use the VersaSpa Prep Gel. It’s a little packet you can purchase at the counter, and you apply it just like tanning lotion. The Prep Gel opens your pores so your skin will soak in more of the VersaSpa solution, which means you will get a deeper tan.
The Prep Gel is just like a lotion, so you won’t need to do anything after you apply it. Just do the VersaSpa like you always do, and let the Prep Gel do it’s magic. You don’t wipe it off afterwards, so you’ll be ready to hit the town as soon as you’re done with your VersaSpa session.

With the VersaSpa, you have a choice between Clear or Tinted Bronze sunless tan solution. You’ll get the same gorgeous results; it just depends on whether or not you want immediate color, or for it to be a gradual tan.
With the Tinted Bronze solution, you will get color right away. However, the color will still develop over a 4 – 6 hour time period. This choice is great if you need an automatic tan.
The Clear solution is just that – clear. You won’t notice color right away, but it will gradually develop over 4 – 6 hours.

To get a perfect sunless tan, here are a few tanning tips to help you get ready.
- The day you are planning on getting a sunless tan, shave your legs. Your legs will be nice and smooth, and the solution won’t have to get past any little leg hairs.
- Exfoliate your skin. We carry a body scrub in our salons that is perfect for this. When you exfoliate your skin, this knocks off any dead skin cells that will shed off and take your lovely sunless tan with it.
- Don’t apply moisturizer after you shower. This will allow your skin to soak in the solution easier, and in a more even manner.
- Use the prep gel. This will balance your skin’s pH levels, and ensure a perfect, flawless sunless tan.
- Have the Tanning Consultant help you choose your color. They are trained in helping you get the best tan possible and will be able to give you great guidance on this.

No. Sunless tanning has a bit of a bad rap because of older solutions that had a bit of an orange tint. But over time, the solution has advanced and it is now made with beet and walnut extracts, which will give your skin a natural looking reddish-brown tint.
Of course, everybody’s skin reacts differently so there is a possibility that your skin could have a bit of an orange tint. When this happens, it’s because your skin’s pH levels had a reaction to the solution.
We always suggest trying a sunless tan for the first time when you don’t have a big event coming up. This way, you can perfect your color choice, and have all of the poses down pat.
But to make sure your skin pH is balanced, you can use the VersaSpa Amplifier prep gel, which will make sure you will get flawless results.

To go along with this month being the National Sunless Tanning Month, we have some sunless tanning tips for you.
• Before you do the VersaSpa, exfoliate your skin, shave your legs, and don’t apply moisturizer. This will give your skin the perfect prep to absorb the solution properly.
• If you haven’t done the VersaSpa before, ask your Tanning Consultant to show you the poses. I like to pretend I’m doing the dance to Walk Like an Egyptian!
• When choosing your color, have your Tanning Consultant help you. You want to pick a color that’s going to look natural with your current tan.
• After your visit, avoid sweating, getting wet, and applying moisturizer for 4 – 6 hours while the VersaSpa is doing its thing. If you do this, it could affect your results.
• Wear dark, loose clothing when you know you’re going to do a sunless session. This will help prevent the solution from rubbing onto your clothes; and when it does it won’t be noticeable.
• Apply the barrier cream to your fingers, toes, and the back of your ankles. This will keep these drier parts of your body from absorbing more solution.
• When putting on the hair net, don’t place it on your forehead. Place it so it rests just behind your hairline.

Valentine’s Day is a very special time for so many couples, and if you’re anything like me you want to look your absolute best. I’m going to share my little routine on how I get ready for my Valentine’s Day date every year.
The first thing I do to pamper my skin is to exfoliate while I’m in the shower, then apply a good tan extender lotion afterwards. This makes my skin very soft and silky – perfect for being touched.
Next, I do the Double Dip at Sun Tan City. I apply a good indoor tanning lotion and face lotion, then slide into the Instant bed for a few minutes. I bring my iPod so I can listen to something really relaxing like opera or the sound of waves. I love the music Sun Tan City plays, but when I’m taking a long bubble bath I always listen to opera.
Then after my warm Instant session is done, I step into the VersaSpa. The Tanning Consultants always help me choose which level I get. But when I’m pampering myself for Valentine’s Day, I add on the moisturizing solution to give my skin a little treat. It’s quick, it’s easy, and it looks great!
And on my way out the door, I pick up the hottest bottle of OPI in the lobby and take that with me to get my nails done the next day.
