Golden Rules of Tanning

by Victoria - 24. January, 2013 08:00

The Golden Rules to getting a great tan are extremely simple to implement into your tanning routine or if you are new to tanning, this is a great way to create your tanning routine.

The first thing you should do to enhance your tanning results is to prep your skin before you tan. Prepping is something you already do, every day… Shower and moisturize your skin. Moisturizing your skin daily will also increase the longevity of your golden glow.

Ladies, a Golden Rule you should always follow is to avoid wearing make-up in the sunbed and sunless booths. Make-up can interfere with the rays and if you’re wearing it in the sunless booth, it can create a barrier between your skin and the formula, which will prevent you from getting the best results possible.

My personal Golden Rule and hopefully one of yours as well: Always apply tanning lotion before every tanning visit. Lotions work best when they are applied right before your tanning sessions. If you don’t know which lotion will give you the best color you can get, ask one of our expert Tanning Consultants. They are there to help you with your tanning goals, so please don’t hesitate to ask them for their advice.

The biggest Golden Rule of all… Wear your goggles! State and federal law require that you wear proper protective eyewear when you are tanning because your eyelids are too thin to block out UV rays entirely. To cater to all of our clients’ preferences, we sell both regular and temporary goggles at all of our salon locations.

The last Golden Rule I will share with you today is to always use a tan extender. As I mentioned before, they are the best way to extend the life of your golden glow and make your skin irresistibly soft.

Be sure to check back monthly for more of our tips, tricks and Golden Rules to tanning. Don’t forget to ask our expert Tanning Consultants for their advice if you have any questions.  Happy Tanning!

Tanning Consultant Tip: What to Do During Tanning

by Victoria - 11. October, 2012 08:00

For new tanners, hitting the sun bed for the first time can be rather intimidating. But fret not: the experts at Sun Tan City are here to make your pre-tan prep as simple as possible.

So once you finally step into your private room at Sun Tan City, what can you do to make sure you get the best results? Here are four easy steps to a perfect (and protected) sun tan.

First, decide on your tanning attire (or lack thereof). Many of our clients opt to tan in the nude to avoid those not-so-fabulous tan lines. Others, however, feel more comfortable wearing their underwear or a swimsuit in the sun bed. And taking the time to tan is all about comfort and relaxation!

If you do decide to tan nude, remember that some areas of your body aren’t as accustomed to sunlight, making you more susceptible to overexposure in those sensitive areas. You may decide to cover these areas for part of your tanning session to avoid the any sensitivity. Over time, though, these areas, like others on your body, will build up tolerance for tanning, and covering up may no longer be necessary. Whatever you choose, make sure that you take the steps to make your visit and beyond as comfortable as possible.

After deciding how you will tan, you’ll apply tanning lotion. There are many lotion options available to you, and what you should use is unique to your own skin and tanning goals. At Sun Tan City, our Tanning Consultants are happy to help you find the best lotion for your session. After removing your clothes, apply your lotion evenly on your skin. Even coverage will not only help you tan evenly, but will ensure that you get the maximum results from your session. Bonus tip: To keep your skin hydrated, moisturized and to keep your tan longer, follow your session with one of our amazing Tan Extenders!!

Grabbing goggles is not only the best way to protect your eyes while tanning, but wearing proper protective eyewear while tanning is a state and federal law. Why? Even if you close your eyes in the bed, your eyelids are too thin to block UV rays entirely during your session, which could cause long-term vision changes or damage. Even covering your eyes with a towel will not provide enough protection; as UV light penetrates the fabric Before you step into one of our sun beds, be sure to purchase protective eyewear at our front desk.

Now that you’re all ready to tan, the last step is easy: Just relax! In all of our tanning beds, there’s no need to flip. But if you do want to make sure to eliminate uneven color under the arms or the well-known backside “half-moons”, feel free to lift your arms over your head or sit up on the edge of the bed for the last few minutes of your session.

When you’re at Sun Tan City, we want to make tanning easy. And with our four easy steps to each tanning session, you’ll not only get a great, even tan, but you’ll be tanning with the knowledge you’ll need to get the best results possible. If you have more questions on your tanning session, feel free to ask a Tanning Consultant at your favorite Sun Tan City. Happy Tanning!

Tanning FAQ: Is it normal to have itchy skin after tanning?

by Victoria - 17. May, 2012 08:00

Taking the time to tan can be one of the most relaxing parts of your day, but sometimes, you can be left with a post-tan itch. And while itching after tanning is fairly common, it can mean that you have minor sunburn, are allergic to bed cleaners, or are more sensitive to UV light.  Here are some ways to prevent after-tan itching and enjoy your tanning session as much as possible:

Tanning beds are very warm. Combine the heat with extended tanning, and you can get a post-tanning heat rash. Use tanning lotion with extra moisturizers, and try to reduce your tanning time during the first few sessions. Then, you can gradually increase your tanning bed stay over a couple of weeks to help your skin adjust. Giving your skin time to adjust between tanning sessions will not only help you avoid a post-tan itch or burn, but will also help you tan faster. It can take up to 24 hours for your pigment to swing into full production and show up as golden, tanned skin. To make sure your skin doesn’t over tan (and burn), only tan once every 24 to 36 hours.

Try to shower as soon as you can. Showering can sometimes slow the effects of sunburn or soothe a heat rash. After showering, be sure to apply an aloe-based lotion. If you need some help finding an after-tanning lotion, remember the Tanning Consultants at Sun Tan City can make the best recommendations for the right products for you.

If your skin continues to itch even after it has adjusted to the tanning bed (after 2-3 weeks), it is important to see your dermatologist. You could be having an allergic reaction to the UV light or be allergic to the tanning bed cleansers. If you are allergic to what we use to clean our beds, let your Sun Tan City Tanning Consultant know, and we can wipe down your bed with a different cleaning solution before you tan. Taking antibiotics can also cause skin sensitivity, which cannot only make you itch, but burn, more easily, so talk to your doctor before tanning.

As always, if you have more questions about how to avoid itchy skin after tanning, be sure to consult one of our tanning experts at Sun Tan City. We’re more than happy to help you get your perfect, itch-free tan.

Tanning Consultant Tips – Maximizing Your Tanning Time

by Victoria - 8. May, 2012 08:00

While your time in a Sun Tan City bed may be the most relaxing part of your day, it’s our most important time of day. We’re dedicated to helping you get a beautiful, bronze glow. And while you may know the basics of healthy tanning, the experts at Sun Tan City want you to maximize your tanning time! Here are a few simple tips and tricks to get the most out of our beds.

Before you tan, make sure to prep your skin. This means having clean, moisturized skin. Moisturized skin will not only feel softer, but will hold a tan better as well. So make sure regular at-home moisturizing is part of your skin-care routine. It’s also a good idea to remove make-up and not wear deodorant or perfume while tanning. Both can interfere with tanning lotion and the UV rays, which can lead to a discolored or uneven tan.

When you tan, be sure to use a tanning lotion. Tanning lotions are designed to help you get a darker, long-lasting tan. And remember, the Tanning Consultants at Sun Tan City are always there to help you find an indoor tanning lotion that will help you get the best tan possible.

While there is no need to flip during your session in any of the beds at Sun Tan City, some people prefer to put their arms over their head to make sure their arms and underarms tan evenly. If this is uncomfortable, try one of Sun Tan City’s Fastest tanning beds, which are designed with a facial tanner, shoulder tanner, and full-body 160-watt reflector lamps that will give you a perfect tan from head to toe.

After you tan, moisturize some more! Tan extenders will keep your post-tan skin moisturized, which will help your tan develop and last longer. Our Tanning Consultants can help you find a tan extender that will keep your skin moist and your tan golden long after your visit.

For best results, you should tan regularly, but not every day. We recommend waiting 36-48 hours between visits so your tan can fully develop, which equates to no more than 2 – 3 times a week. That’s plenty of tanning for building and maintaining your base glow.

Getting the most out of your tan at Sun Tan City is easy. Between our high-quality beds, luxurious tanning lotions, and expert tanning advice from our Tanning consultants, you have all you need to get a beautiful, long-lasting tan. Happy tanning!

New FAQ from Sun Tan City – Is Protective Eyewear Recommended?

by Victoria - 21. February, 2012 08:00

Each month we’ll bring you new Frequently Asked Questions that our Sun Tan City Tanning Experts receive from clients just like you. If you have a specific question you’d like to have us answer publicly, please feel free respond to any of our blog posts or write your question to us on Facebook. That way, we can share the questions and our knowledge with others tanning connoisseurs just like you!

Is protective eyewear recommended during tanning sessions?
It’s not recommended – it’s demanded! You must wear goggles that protect against 99% of UVA rays and 99.9% of UVB rays…and it’s a super smart idea. This specially formulated lens protects your sensitive eye tissue from exposure. Too much exposure could lead to permanent damage to your vision. Serious consequences include cornea burns or degeneration, loss of color vision, loss of vision at night, or even cataracts.

So, whether you purchase a pair for multiple use, or just use the temps we provide on-site, goggles should always be in your tanning repertoire.

Until next time, feel free to send us a note on Facebook or talk to your local tanning consultant directly. We’re always available to help a client in need!

Tanning Consultant Tips: How to Tan

by Victoria - 16. February, 2012 08:00

We all tan differently, so knowing your skin type and speaking with a tanning expert at Sun Tan City is always advised. We pride ourselves on being experts in the tanning industry, and are here to share our experience to help make the most of your experience.

At Sun Tan City, you can get a great tan any time of year, so you need to know how to tan in order to maximize your experience! Here are some thought-starters…

- Pick the appropriate apparel to wear during your visit. If you have a lot of halter-tops or strapless tops, then you want to avoid straps in the wrong spots.

- Wear approved protective eye wear during every visit. State and federal regulations require that every time you tan, you wear eye wear that protects against 99% of UVA rays and 99.9% of UVB rays. We offer temporary and multi-use goggles at every Sun Tan City location.

- Tan in a bed that is right for you! Any of our tanning consultants can gauge your skin type and recommend a length of tanning session and appropriate tanning bed that will be the best choice for you.

- Use approved lotions for tanning. Outdoor tanning lotions are not OK in the beds, so ask one of our expertly trained tanning consultants to guide you through our products and explain how they can help your tanning experience.

And lastly, ask questions! We are always here to help and guide you through the process. Tanning is our passion and we love to talk about it!!

Top New FAQs from Sun Tan City – Is the Use of SPF Lotion Recommended?

by Victoria - 31. January, 2012 08:00

As we mentioned earlier this month, we will be bringing you new frequently asked tanning questions each month.

So without further a due, the second question for January – Is the use SPF lotion recommended?

Not necessarily. SPF tanning lotions are engineered to protect you from prolonged exposure to UV rays. At Sun Tan City, your exposure in our state-of-the-art tanning beds is controlled and minimal. Instead of SPF lotions, we recommend the use of our indoor tanning-specific lotions that promote skin moisture and help to prolong the life of your tan.

Remember, each month we’re looking to answer questions from our tanning clients just like you. If you have a specific question you’d like to have us answer publicly, please feel free respond to any of our blog posts or write your question to us on Facebook. That way, we can share the questions and our knowledge with others tanning connoisseurs just like you! And as always, feel free to talk to your local tanning consultant directly. We’re always available to help any of our clients in need!
