Tanning FAQ: What is Photosensitivity?

by Victoria - 30. August, 2012 08:00

Have you noticed that after tanning indoors or outdoors that your skin is a little red or itchy? The itching or mild burning sensation may be caused by a number of things like dry skin, a minor burn, or more. Another explanation, though, could be photosensitivity, a fairly common allergy to sunlight or tanning bulbs.

Photosensitivity is a condition that causes your skin to be sensitive to sunlight, making it have a somewhat more intense reaction when it is exposed to UV rays from either indoor or outdoor tanning.  Symptoms of photosensitivity include burning, stinging, swelling and peeling. If you are photosensitive, it’s probably something you have noticed before with prolonged outdoor exposure.

Photosensitivity can also be caused by the use of medications (including antibiotics, acne medications, antihistamines), beauty products, or even genetics.  If you are experiencing burning or pain after being exposed to UV light, talk to your doctor or dermatologist to know what is causing your condition and how to treat it.

At Sun Tan City, we want you to tan as safely as possible. That’s why we advise you to consult your doctor or dermatologist before starting a tanning routine. And, if you are photosensitive, our Sunless Tanning booth may be the perfect way to get your summer glow!

We hope to see you soon at Sun Tan City, and, as always, happy tanning!

FAQ: Do I need to wait to shower or swim after tanning?

by Victoria - 17. July, 2012 08:00

Ok, Sun Tan City fans, lets settle this once and for all: Is it okay to shower after tanning?

Our answer…it depends on the type of tan you get.

After tanning in one of our indoor tanning beds (like our Fast, Faster, Fastest, or Instant beds), you can shower as soon as you’d like! Because indoor tanning beds work by UV light penetrating your skin (and changing the pigment), your tan cannot wash away in the shower. Taking a shower, though, may cause your skin to cool faster, which will take away some of the reddening that is caused by the heat of the bed (which will fade, over time, whether you shower or not). It takes a few days for the full result of your time in a tanning bed to develop, so shower or not, you’ll see the best results later in the week.

Showering after a Sunless Tanning Booth visit is another story. Sunless tanning solution, even if tinted, takes hours to fully develop. Getting your skin wet or wearing tight-fitting clothing during you processing time can make you tan smear or become uneven. So after spending time in either a VersaSpa or MyMyst Sunless Tanning Booth, you should wait anywhere from 4-6 hours before not only showering, but swimming or sweating.

And that, fabulous readers, is the truth behind showering after tanning. If you have more questions about showering after tanning, stop by your favorite Sun Tan City and ask one of our Tanning Consultants today!

Tanning FAQ: How Can I Prolong My Tan?

by Victoria - 29. May, 2012 08:00

Nothing can make you feel more confident and attractive than a beautiful, long-lasting tan. And at Sun Tan City, we want you to maintain your bronzed glow. All it takes is a few easy steps!

Before you head to Sun Tan City, be sure to exfoliate. During a tanning session, the light affects the top layer of skin. This top layer only lasts between six to ten days, which means that having the freshest skin possible will mean keeping your tan longer. Use a light exfoliating body wash in your morning shower, and you’ll be one step closer to a long-lasting tan.

Moisturizing before and after tanning is also a must to prolong your tan. And while moisturized skin tans better than dry skin, skip your after-shower lotion on a day you plan to tan. Chemicals in your daily moisturizers may interact with those in your tanning lotion causing and uneven tan. We don’t want to rob your skin of extra moisturizing though, so ask your tanning consultant about our line of tanning lotions designed to maximize and prolong your tan. After you tan, apply an after-tan lotion or tan extender. Keeping your freshly tanned skin moisturized is key to keeping your new tan as long as possible. And at Sun Tan City, we have plenty of great tan extenders to choose from.

If you have more questions on how to keep your tan around long after visiting Sun Tan City, see one of our Tanning Consultants or check our FAQ section. Happy tanning!

Tanning FAQ: Is it normal to have itchy skin after tanning?

by Victoria - 17. May, 2012 08:00

Taking the time to tan can be one of the most relaxing parts of your day, but sometimes, you can be left with a post-tan itch. And while itching after tanning is fairly common, it can mean that you have minor sunburn, are allergic to bed cleaners, or are more sensitive to UV light.  Here are some ways to prevent after-tan itching and enjoy your tanning session as much as possible:

Tanning beds are very warm. Combine the heat with extended tanning, and you can get a post-tanning heat rash. Use tanning lotion with extra moisturizers, and try to reduce your tanning time during the first few sessions. Then, you can gradually increase your tanning bed stay over a couple of weeks to help your skin adjust. Giving your skin time to adjust between tanning sessions will not only help you avoid a post-tan itch or burn, but will also help you tan faster. It can take up to 24 hours for your pigment to swing into full production and show up as golden, tanned skin. To make sure your skin doesn’t over tan (and burn), only tan once every 24 to 36 hours.

Try to shower as soon as you can. Showering can sometimes slow the effects of sunburn or soothe a heat rash. After showering, be sure to apply an aloe-based lotion. If you need some help finding an after-tanning lotion, remember the Tanning Consultants at Sun Tan City can make the best recommendations for the right products for you.

If your skin continues to itch even after it has adjusted to the tanning bed (after 2-3 weeks), it is important to see your dermatologist. You could be having an allergic reaction to the UV light or be allergic to the tanning bed cleansers. If you are allergic to what we use to clean our beds, let your Sun Tan City Tanning Consultant know, and we can wipe down your bed with a different cleaning solution before you tan. Taking antibiotics can also cause skin sensitivity, which cannot only make you itch, but burn, more easily, so talk to your doctor before tanning.

As always, if you have more questions about how to avoid itchy skin after tanning, be sure to consult one of our tanning experts at Sun Tan City. We’re more than happy to help you get your perfect, itch-free tan.

New FAQ: The Difference Between Indoor & Outdoor Tanning

by Victoria - 26. April, 2012 08:00

Each month we’ll bring you new Frequently Asked Questions that our Sun Tan City Tanning Experts receive from clients just like you. If you have a specific question you’d like to have us answer, please feel free respond to any of our blog posts or write your question to us on Facebook. That way, we can share the questions and our knowledge with others tanning connoisseurs just like you!

What is the difference between indoor & outdoor tanning?

Control. Indoor tanning allows you total control over the amount of UV and the type of UV your skin is exposed to. When you tan outdoors, you can’t control any of it. Time of day, geographic location, season, and weather, are all variable elements which means your outdoor tan is unpredictable. At Sun Tan City we promote “Smart Tanning” and the golden rule is to get a great tan every time-and to never, ever burn. Outdoors, skin is exposed to a blend of ultraviolet light (UV) that causes an effect within your cells that is defined as sun tanning. The results of this natural process can run the gamete. You could get a great golden glow one day and the next be peeling and red. It’s not fun to put your skin through that process.

With indoor sun tanning at Sun Tan City tanning salons, both the amount of UV and the type of UV your skin is exposed to can be strictly controlled. Controlled and responsible exposure, preventative and nourishing skin care products, state-of-the art tanning equipment, and expert staff education makes indoor sun tanning at Sun Tan City the most control over your body’s natural tanning process you can get.

For additional research-supported information on the risks and benefits of indoor tanning, please visit our tanning resources page.

We’ll be bringing you new Q & A’s monthly, but in the meantime, feel free to send us a note on Facebook or talk to your local consultant directly. We’re always available to help a client in need!
