The History of Sun Tan City
Sun Tan City has grown from the humblest of beginnings—a few tanning beds placed in the back of an existing video store—to its current position as the fastest growing chain of sun tanning salons in America. But, this success story didn't happen overnight ...
Before launching Sun Tan City in 1999, enterprising brothers David and Rick Kueber owned a chain of successful video retail stores. Despite the chain's success, business tended to slow during the industry's summer down season. The brothers made a fateful decision to incorporate tanning units into their stores as an attempt to boost store traffic during these months. It soon became clear that the extra business could easily support having its own space, and the first Sun Tan City salon was born.
Sun Tan City flourished in the company's early years, and by 2005, the business had grown to 21 locations. In the years that followed, Sun Tan City experienced explosive growth and now boasts over 200 tanning locations across seventeen states.
Sun Tan City's leadership often debates the most vital ingredient in this recipe for success. Co-Founder Rick Kueber insists that it's all thanks to the dedicated group of employees at Sun Tan City. His brother David places the praise on their determination to have the best of everything—the best equipment, cleanest tanning salons, highest-quality lamps, and most knowledgeable staff. Vice President of Operations, Jeff Forrest, maintains that the key to success has been the ability of Sun Tan City to adapt the company objectives to suit the changing needs of its clientele. But perhaps Chief Operating Officer, Steve Greenlaw, explained it best with a statement everyone could agree on: "The client experience is our number one goal and everything else we do is driven by that one simple fact."
